At Pilates in the Berkshires, we use the Pilates Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Barrel, and Pilates Mat Exercises, as well as the Physio Ball and Power Plate.
PILATES FOR BEGINNERS
Depending on your level of fitness and your personal goals, you will be introduced to the Pilates exercise principles and the special equipment – the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Mat, the Barrel, and the Chair. The Pilates equipment offers support, wonderful stretches, and specific challenges. You might also want to learn a routine that you can practice at home.
It usually doesn’t take long for people to comment on how much more conscious they are of their posture and of what Pilates training calls the “powerhouse” – the large muscles in the lower trunk and upper thighs. I have worked with beginners between ages 15 and 89 and every individual has benefited tremendously from Pilates. Look for a short beginner’s work-out you can try at home on the video page.
PILATES AT THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
Whether or not you have any particular issues or physical problems, Pilates exercises can help you to improve your posture and use your body more efficiently in all activities, particularly sports. Many accomplished athletes have a surprisingly weak stomach and tight lower back – and it’s these physical conditions that Pilates addresses so well. So even if you already work out, or engage regularly in sports or dance, Pilates can help you improve your performance through teaching you how to move from the core muscles with the ease and strength.
An added benefit of practicing Pilates at this level is an emphasis on movements that we do less often as we get older — for example rolling on your back and different actions taken from an upside-down position. These movements use your brain in a way that keeps your mental functioning flexible and youthful. As in all Pilates exercises, they increase your confidence in your own ability to keep developing physically and mentally. And they’re also fun! As in most disciplines, with Pilates training there is always further to go. Most exercises have a number of levels that increasingly challenge balance and control. Many Pilates studios choose not to teach the more advanced exercises. But at Pilates in the Berkshires, we want to take you as far as you want to go. We use a safe and controlled approach to help you consistently stretch to your highest capacity.
